John Christoforou (1921-2014) is a Greek painter born in England and naturalized French.
He studied at the Fine Arts of Athens before the war where he was enlisted in the Royal Air Force. From 1946, marked by his experience of the war, he entirely devoted himself to painting. His first exhibition took place in London in 1949 at the Twenty Brook Street Gallery. In 1956 he moved to Paris where he was represented by the Galerie Rive Gauche of Rudy Augustinci until its closure.
Christoforou is recognized as one of the precursors of the “New Figuration”. His work, expressionist and tormented, explores themes such as crucifixions, angels, childbirth, scarecrows, etc.
