Painting as a love experience
“First of all, there is this basic surface which is only the setting of a pictorial adventure set in a context. This surface does not provide a reflection but is rather a one-way mirror on the present.
More d'information
Some will probably insist on the faces they imagine in the background. But Jane Planson doesn’t do portraits. Her aim is to extend the intense moments in life she embodies and try to capture a moment. Even if many of her works have a name often associated to a quality caught in action, each work is a synthesis of several models met in the artist’s daily life. These models may have not offered to be models. Sometimes, the atelier is cold and the canvas is large, but the focus is always on the model. These strange figures are often memories of friends or lovers she met along the way.
Her willingness to paint them to preserve them from disappearing into oblivion should not be described as hysteria. The turn of the century is the moment where space and paint split into a scenery in which the everlasting adventure of an encouter or an unikely conflict seems plausible.
2003 and 2004 have seen her works influenced by political aspects and the violence of modern history. Yet, she always rebounds and reinitiates a dialogue with humain beings. The lack of background and objects in her works provides a better picture of the mental identity of the characters. Whether she paints an imaginary or idealised model, it is always influenced by one of her relatives. Together, they are not a family or a community, but a small sample of people met during half a century of genuine passion. To Jane Planson, painting requires this particular essential requirement […]”
